Admittedly Browns Of Rivonia does have the fortune to be located in one of South Africa's most affluent areas. But that alone is far from enough to have secured this exceptional restaurant a repeated position at the top of many of the country's most revered lists for great places to dine.

Part of its charm resides in the premises, a beautifully converted old farmhouse, endowed with the kind of rural splendour typically associated with the lush areas of the Cape. But this is a Johannesburg restaurant, and such marvelous surroundings are a rarity indeed. If they're lucky enough to find themselves seated on the patio, guests can enjoy the calming greenery with a view of the lovely garden and its koi pond.

The patio extends from the main dining area, itself bright, airy and tastefully realized in a way which speaks of the gentle sophistication to be found in rich woods and crisp white linens. Browns is invested with an elegance which takes its cues from the heritage of the property while providing an elegant appeal for the many discerning diners who find themselves regularly enjoying the myriad pleasures of venue and menu.

In the spirit of a rustic retreat with beautiful yet simple food, the menu at Browns Of Rivonia discloses a passion for world cuisine while never straying far from the cornucopia of magnificent fresh produce that is so abundant in South Africa. At the helm of the kitchen is Executive Chef Ken Garvey. A man whose talent for getting the best results from the finest produce is in part responsible for the restaurant being awarded the title of Best Business Lunch Venue in Johannesburg for eight consecutive years.
Whether enjoying the clement, cooling patio on a sunny summer's day or luxuriating in the welcoming main dining room while the latest deal is under discussion, there are few restaurants in Johannesburg which manage to consistently achieve the culinary heights of Browns Of Rivonia.
Naturally, the a la carte menu changes seasonally to allow Chef Garvey and his gifted kitchen team to make full use of the freshest produce, although you can always expect delightful seafood and game dishes, treated to a characteristic touch of culinary flair. From the succulent, fresh flavors of Stir-Fried Calamari strips atop summer salad greens, finished with a tangy ginger and spring onion sauce, to the earthy delights of Guinea Fowl Terrine and even an exotic Crocodile Won-Ton, it's obvious that Chef Garvey has a talent for merging the loved and known with the unexpected.
The mains develop on the starters to yield a wealth of hearty and tempting dishes. Seafood lovers might not be able to pass up the opportunity for the nourishing nuances of a Prawns Pie. A delicacy created from prawns, calamari and mussels cooked gently in a creamy Chenin Blanc reduction before being crowned with a fluffy pillow of mashed potato.
Game lovers will certainly be tempted by the Roast Duck, a free range bird of which the diner gets to eat half. Glazed with a mixture of Drambuie and orange, it evokes the finest of traditional French dishes, a quality beautifully offset by the delightful addition of bubble and squeak. If the Moroccan Lamb Shank hasn't left you glowing and without room for a another mouthful, then perhaps a sampling from the dessert menu will prove the perfect punctuation to a marvelous meal.
The Chocolate and Hazelnut Samosas are not to be missed by those who lean towards the decadent side of sugary treats, while crisp, brisk sorbet may be obligatory if a refreshed palate is required. And a refreshed palate is certainly advised if you hope to sample from the Cheese Room.
The Cheese Room is a small adventure within a meal. Diners can venture to the temperature-controlled room to choose from one of the best collections of international cheese in the country. A sampling of one of two is to be savored, perhaps with a glass of suitable wine or port.
The award-winning cellars, of which there are four, are all humidity, temperature and light controlled, and boast a choice in excess of 30, 000 bottles. These range from the best of South African wines to famed vintages from Bordeaux and Burgundy, and a bit of the best from everywhere in-between. Not to forget the enticing array of rare Champagnes, ports, fine Scotch malt and connoisseur cognacs which are sure to delight the expert and enthusiast alike.
Those who appreciate the rich aesthetic of beautifully arranged cellars, might like to avail themselves of Browns' Wine Cellar venue. Finished in wood and glass, it is a wonderfully warm and inviting area for parties of up to 50 guests.
Wine lovers may want to keep their Monday evenings free, for this is when Browns holds a wine evening in the cellar. A set menu is created to suit the wines, which are represented by different winemakers, making for an evening of superlative sipping and the food to match. Saturday night is given over to the talents of resident Jazz legend, Dan Hill, who sets the tone for a romantic meal for two or perhaps a lively meal with good friends.
As a well-attended venue for business lunches, the restaurant is well suited to a variety of functions from celebrations to product launches and wedding receptions. Private rooms are available for up to 200 guests.
