While Moyo has won many awards since opening in 2002, it is perhaps the Eat Out People's Choice Award which best captures the special relationship this unique Johannesburg restaurant has with its diners.

Founder and owner Jason Laurie has opened a few branches, one at the famous Market Theatre and another in the Cape, but it is the Moyo at Melrose Arch which seems to have won the hearts and minds of South Africa's adventurous gourmets. Melrose Arch is an area of New Urbanization, and where better to create a restaurant which eschews the typical notions of a fine dining experience to create something entirely of Africa.

There are few enough sophisticated eateries in the world which take from the rich melange of pan-African cuisine, bringing the spicy and unusual to diners who are looking to be excited and delighted, and Moyo is leading the way for a new kind of fine dining experience, one which is not easily defined in usual terms.

Far more than merely a place to enjoy Africa's most prized culinary treats, Moyo is five-floor establishment realized in rich textures and details. From the winding pathways and spiral staircases which lead you from one room to the next, to the Moroccan tent which creates a perfect, sultry ambiance in which to savor the fusion of cuisines from all over the continent, Moyo oozes exoticism.
Culinary delights from Nigeria to Senegal and Ethiopia to Egypt fill the appealing menu, supplying Africa's rarest morsels to the diners of Johannesburg. But not all the food derives from central Africa and its north, east and west neighbors, there are also delectable dishes from the south. Perhaps a lovely Potjie or Bobotie will satisfy your craving for an authentic South African meal, while those with a hankering for the curious combinations of ingredients, textures and spices, might opt for the likes a Tagine from the north.
Though don't expect simple iterations of national dishes, you'll find an entire universe of little marvels which make use of the best ingredients. The likes of the Duck and Naartjie Samosa, served with a kumquat and Van der Hum sauce, is a useful example of the kind of treat which is revealed on opening the menu.
Naturally, African cuisine makes use of ingredients which are to be found in often dry regions. Robust fruits and nuts are likely to find their way into one or more of your choices. Perhaps an aromatic stew using apricots and almonds is the way to go for those who enjoy the tang of unexpected dishes.
While combinations of spices and exotic ingredients are part of the spirit of Moyo's menu, it is also a veritable paradise for meat, fish and poultry lovers. From the unmitigated magnificence of fresh Knysna Oysters to the meatier marvels like Springbok Carpaccio and Kudu Bresaola, there is delicacy to redefine the most savvy gourmets understanding of perfectly prepared rarities.
Dishes like the Lamb Mechoui combine the finest local meat with the appealing methods and flavors of traditional Moroccan cuisine. This Mechoui is created by marinading superior lamb in cumin and paprika before roasting it. Served with a red wine reduction, it supplies contrasts of flavor and layers of complexity to make any European restaurant seem prosaic by comparison.
Vegetarians are sure to be amazed at the abundance of enticing offerings. Africa's cuisine is often characterized by the use of fresh vegetables, legumes, breads and even fruits. Far from being contrived to meet the demands of non-meat eaters, a vegetarian meal at Moyo is of the most natural, authentic variety.
As you might expect from a restaurant which celebrates the continent's culture, the wine list is rife with exceptional South African bottles. From the already known and delightful to speciality bottles from little known estates of prestigious stature, there are few better cellars in the country. Moyo has gone even further to delight both oenophiles and casual tipplers alike by collaborating with Mischa Estate in Wellington to produce two exceptional bottles of Moyo red, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Shiraz, perfect wines for a large number of the rich, meaty dishes on the menu.
But Moyo is not only a sophisticated eatery showcasing the culinary wonders of Africa, it is also a vibrant venue for entertainment. From traditional storytellers and West African folk musicians, to African influenced jazz by some of the country's most revered artists, there is always something on the go.
The stage forms a central attraction and you can eat and drink while enveloped in the sounds of the nations which have informed the menu. If you're after the colorful tapestry of cultural diversity, then Moyo after sundown is the Johannesburg venue to feed your every sense. Even though there are over 500 seats, you will still probably have to book, especially if it's a big music night. Since almost every night is given over to live performance, it's best to plan your visit in advance to make sure you not only get a table, but one with a view of the stage. Lunch time diners need not feel left out, for many bands and musicians can be heard during the day.
For a quiet moment after the music and meal has come to its gentle, sensuous end, the Cigar Lounge offers luxurious chairs in which to relax and enjoy one of the fine cigars from the beautifully stocked humidor.
